NOV 2026UX WRITING

Microcopy that doesn’t sound like a robot

Microcopy is the tiny text nobody notices until it is wrong: the words on a button, an error message, an empty page, a form field. I studied UX writing at Amanj Academy, and the lesson that stayed with me is simple — write like you are helping one real person, in that exact moment.

Three short rules

1. Say what happens next. “Submit” tells me nothing. “Send my application” tells me exactly what the button will do. People click what they understand.

2. When something goes wrong, say why — and what to do. “Error 404” is a dead end. “We couldn’t find that page. It may have moved — try the search below, or go back home” is a way out. Never blame the user for a system problem.

3. Cut every word that does no work. Read the sentence out loud. If you can remove a word and nothing changes, remove it. Short is not rude — short is respectful of someone’s time.

Good microcopy is invisible. The user does not think “what beautiful writing” — they just finish what they came to do, and leave happy.

That is also a good test for SEO content, by the way. If a paragraph can be deleted and the reader loses nothing, delete it. Google and humans agree on that more often than people think.
